SHINE FOR SCOTT was founded in late 2010 following the death of the organization’s namesake, Scott Walden. Scott passed away from colon cancer on June 3, 2010, eighteen months after his initial diagnosis. He was just 40 years old.
After his diagnosis, it quickly became evident to Scott, his family, and his friends that Scott had several barriers to overcome as a young person dealing with this disease. First, there was a lack of understanding and knowledge regarding the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of colorectal cancer. After all, people under 50 don’t get colon cancer, right? Wrong! Second, there was very little financial assistance available for middle-aged and middle income individuals faced with a debilitating disease. Third, there were not as many medical treatments for colorectal cancer as there were for other types of cancers. It was these barriers that ultimately took Scott from his family and friends far too soon.
So, using Scott’s experience as their framework, the members of Shine For Scott decided they wanted to break down those barriers that stood in Scott’s way and light a path to a brighter future for young people affected by colon cancer. As a result, a four-part mission was drafted.
Today, in Scott’s honor, Shine For Scott is here to: provide financial SUPPORT to patients; EDUCATE the public; help individuals DETECT colon cancer through life saving screenings; and one day, CURE colorectal cancer by funding top of the line and progressive research.
